What will I be doing if I volunteer?

From now until the end, you'll most likely be helping to weave saplings into the sculpture.

The sculpture consists of five structures in proximity to one another, and each one is different from the other.  The first one is finished.  The second (and largest one) is just now getting a vaulted roof.  The third form has four walls but no roof. The fourth one has vertical posts that are just now being slanted into position.  And the fifth one is yet to be started.

It looks like we will need some additional willow saplings early next week to finish out the fifth form, so you may help out with collecting them.  But mostly you'll be adding to the sculpture.

Can I volunteer more than once?

It all depends.  Interest is growing and the remaining shifts are filling up fast.  At a certain point there will be too many cooks in the proverbial kitchen, and we will most likely have to turn volunteers away in the final days.  So don't wait to sign up if you're interested.

How do I sign up?

Send an initial email to our Volunteer Coordinator, Sienna Kuhn, telling her of your interest in volunteering:  stickwork@csbsju.edu.

Sienna will reply with a list of available shifts and a request for your cell phone number, to which you can answer with your preferences.

Where do I go when I'm scheduled for a shift?

All volunteers are encouraged to use the STICKWORK shuttle to and from the Saint John's campus for each shift out on the Arboretum, rather than walk out or drive out to the site on their own.

The STICKWORK shuttle stops at both Sexton Commons and the Flyntown parking lot at the beginning of each shift, and returns volunteers to the same locations at the end of their shift.

If you're coming from off campus, there is ample space for parking in the Flyntown parking lot (the first lot on your right as you come onto campus from the freeway).  There is very limited parking at the site itself, so we strongly encourage all of our volunteers from off campus to drive past the actual site itself and onto campus before parking their vehicles.

What should I bring?

We will have plenty of work gloves and safety glasses and hard hats, but it never hurts to have a pair that actually fit you well and that you're comfortable wearing.

Bring the following if you have them:
  • Hiking or work boots
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses (no use poking your eye out on a sapling)
  • Hard hat
  • Water bottle (we will provide plenty of ice water and will have paper cups if you need them)
  • Sunscreen

Can I bring a camera?

Of course.  We have a professional photographer on staff who will be taking film and photographic records each day, but you're welcome to take your own.
